VGC analysis
Volcanion is the Fire/Water restricted that punishes the format's Grass and Steel cores with a unique coverage combination. Its Water STAB hits the Ground and Fire types that anchor defensive teams, its Fire STAB punishes the Steel-types that resist Water, and its ability, Water Absorb, gives it a useful immunity. Its special Attack is strong enough to threaten bulky cores, and its typing gives it only a handful of weaknesses, making it a flexible mid-game breaker. Its weaknesses are the ones Water-types carry — vulnerable to Electric and Grass coverage — and its speed, while not elite, is respectable for a restricted Pokémon. It is at its best as a breaker that comes in after the opponent has committed their answers, or as a pivot that pressures while resetting the board. It pairs well with redirection and with partners that handle the Electric and Grass threats it invites. Volcanion is not the flashiest restricted pick, but its combination of unique coverage and durability makes it one of the format's most reliable special breakers, especially against the Grass- and Steel-heavy teams that dominate the current meta.

Suggested usage notes
Volcanion performs best when its role is clearly defined in team preview. As a Special Attacker and Support Pokémon, focus on positioning it where it can execute its job without being forced into unfavorable exchanges.
When teambuilding, pair Volcanion with Pokémon that cover its type weaknesses (see counters section below) and provide the speed control or redirection it needs to function. Review the common moves and items section for established sets, then adjust based on your team's specific needs.
