Its typing gives it resistances to almost everything that matters — Dragon, Ice, Fairy, Dark, Psychic — and its special Attack is strong enough to pressure bulky cores. Its signature ability, Soul-Heart, boosts its special Attack with every KO on the field, turning it into a snowballing threat in the right conditions. Its weaknesses are the ones Steel-types always carry — vulnerable to Fire and Ground coverage — and its speed is mediocre, so it appreciates Trick Room or speed support. It also invites the Ground-types that punish its typing. It functions best as a bulky special attacker that outlasts opponents, a Trick Room setter that doubles as a win condition, or a pivot that pressures while resetting the board. Magearna pairs well with partners that handle the Ground and Fire threats it invites. It is one of the format's most reliable defensive-special picks and a staple on balanced and Trick Room teams alike.
