Rayquaza is one of the most flexible restricted Pokémon in Regulation M-A because its Mega-like stat line and ability to run from either side of the spectrum make it genuinely difficult to prepare against. Its Dragon/Flying typing gives it a valuable Ground immunity, and its access to strong spread Dragon STAB and coverage options lets it punish the format's bulky cores from any angle. Its signature ability in its Mega form removes the drawbacks of its weather interactions, letting it function cleanly in any team structure. Its weaknesses are the standard Dragon package — vulnerable to Ice, Rock, Dragon and Fairy — and its bulk, while decent, does not let it absorb super-effective hits, so it relies on positioning and speed support. It functions best as a mid-game breaker or a fast pivot that pressures while resetting the board, and it pairs well with redirection and with partners that handle the Ice and Fairy threats it invites. Rayquaza rewards flexible, tempo-driven play and is one of the safest restricted picks for players who want options without committing to a single win condition.

Rayquaza performs best when its role is clearly defined in team preview. As a Physical Attacker and Special Attacker Pokémon, focus on positioning it where it can execute its job without being forced into unfavorable exchanges. As a restricted Pokémon, it will attract significant counterplay — plan support and speed control around it.
