Why Incineroar + Amoonguss still defines ChampionsVGC

If you have played more than a handful of ChampionsVGC games, you have faced it: Incineroar on one side, Amoonguss on the other, cycling Intimidate and Rage Powder while a restricted Pokémon cleans up behind them. The core is not flashy, but it is the most consistent way to buy turns in Regulation Set M-A.

Why the core works

Incineroar provides repeated Attack drops, Fake Out tempo and Parting Shot momentum. Amoonguss provides redirection with Rage Powder, a disabling Spore threat and Regenerator recovery. Together they answer both physical offense and single-target setup. Most importantly, they fit on almost any archetype: balance, rain, sun and even some Trick Room lists.

Usage numbers

Incineroar currently sits above 40% usage in our dataset, while Amoonguss is close to 35%. When both are on the same team, the estimated win rate rises slightly because the pair covers each other's weak points. Fire pressure punishes Amoonguss, but Incineroar can pivot out of it. Psychic spread threatens Incineroar, but Amoonguss can redirect it.

Modern adaptations

The biggest change this season is the rise of Safety Goggles on Incineroar. With sleep and Rage Powder everywhere, ignoring powder can swing a game immediately. Amoonguss has also started running Rocky Helmet to punish Urshifu Rapid Strike's multi-hit Surging Strikes and U-turn spam.

How to break it

There are three reliable answers. First, spread Fire and Flying pressure from multiple slots, so Amoonguss cannot redirect everything. Second, use Safety Goggles or Taunt to ignore Spore and Rage Powder. Third, bring a fast special breaker such as Flutter Mane or Chi-Yu to outpace and KO Incineroar before it can cycle Intimidate.

The core is unlikely to disappear while the format rewards positioning this heavily. Learning to play with and against it is the fastest way to improve your tournament results.
