A breakdown of the strongest Pokémon, cores and team styles in the Pokémon Champions format, from Incineroar and Gengar to Dragapult and Whimsicott.
The Pokémon Champions format has settled into a clear hierarchy after the first weeks of tournament play. There are no restricted legendaries, so the metagame rewards flexible team building, strong speed control and the ability to pivot between offense and defense within a single Best-of-3 set. Here is how the metagame looks right now.
The S-tier staples
Three Pokémon sit above the rest. Incineroar remains the most splashable support in the format: Intimidate, Fake Out and Parting Shot give it a role in almost every matchup. Gengar is the premier offensive speed controller, threatening Shadow Ball and Icy Wind in one slot while outspeeding most of the roster. Dragapult rounds out the top three with base 142 Speed and Ghost/Dragon coverage that almost nothing answers cleanly.
Speed control defines the format
Beyond the staples, speed control decides games. Whimsicott provides priority Tailwind that flips the speed game on turn one, while Farigiraf and Hatterene power the format's Trick Room teams. Kingambit punishes passive teams with Sucker Punch priority, and Torkoal offers sun offense under Drought for the Chlorophyll attackers that define the weather archetype.
Rises and falls
Tsareena has climbed back into the spotlight because Queenly Majesty blocks every priority move, shutting down Fake Out and Sucker Punch entirely. On the decline, slower Steel-types struggle to keep pace with Gengar and Dragapult unless they can find a reliable Trick Room matchup.
What to build around
