VGC analysis
Amoonguss is the quiet engine behind most defensive teams in Regulation M-A. Rage Powder gives it the unique ability to absorb single-target attacks aimed at its partner, and Spore is the best status move in the format: one sleep lands and the game changes instantly. Its Grass/Poison typing resists the Fighting and Fairy pressure that threatens the format's top Pokémon, and Regenerator means it never really stays down. The standard set is a bulky support with high HP investment, a 0 Speed IV to move last under Trick Room, and either Rocky Helmet to punish contact moves or Safety Goggles counters in mind. Amoonguss's great weakness is being outplayed rather than overpowered: smart opponents pack Safety Goggles, Grass-resistant coverage or just refuse to attack into Rage Powder, which turns it from an engine into dead weight. It also fears strong Ice and Psychic coverage. Use it to enable a slow, bulky core and protect a setup sweeper, and be ready to cut it loose the moment the opponent shows the tools to ignore powder — that read wins more games than the Spore itself.
Strengths
- + Spore + Rage Powder support
- + Regenerator longevity
- + High HP investment value
Weaknesses
- − Very slow
- − Weak to Fire and Psychic spread
- − Safety Goggles bypass Spore

Suggested usage notes
Amoonguss performs best when its role is clearly defined in team preview. As a Support and Redirection Pokémon, focus on positioning it where it can execute its job without being forced into unfavorable exchanges.
When teambuilding, pair Amoonguss with Pokémon that cover its type weaknesses (see counters section below) and provide the speed control or redirection it needs to function. Review the common moves and items section for established sets, then adjust based on your team's specific needs.
