Lunala is the special Ghost/Psychic restricted that punishes the format's defensive cores with spread pressure and an extremely hard-to-reduce damage output. Its signature move, Moongeist Beam, ignores abilities, which means it can chip past the format's defensive ability shenanigans in a way few attackers can. Its Ghost STAB threatens the format's common Psychic and Ghost pieces, while Psychic coverage and its support options give it flexibility. The critical weakness is shared by all Ghost-types with this defensive profile: it is weak to Dark and Ghost, which the format carries in abundance, and its defensive bulk, while solid, is not enough to survive repeated super-effective hits. Lunala also needs its Speed tier respected — it is not fast enough to outrun the elite speed attackers, so it often runs behind Trick Room or Tailwind. It pairs well with redirection and with partners that can answer the Dark-types that threaten it. In a format where spread damage is king, Lunala is one of the most efficient ways to apply that pressure while staying versatile enough to fit multiple archetypes.

Lunala performs best when its role is clearly defined in team preview. As a Special Attacker and Support Pokémon, focus on positioning it where it can execute its job without being forced into unfavorable exchanges. As a restricted Pokémon, it will attract significant counterplay — plan support and speed control around it. Watch for Sucker Punch and Shadow Claw from common physical attackers.
