VGC analysis
Xerneas is the format's premier Fairy restricted and the ultimate answer to the Dragon and Dark pressure that defines Regulation M-A. Its signature move, Geomancy, transforms it into a terrifying sweeper after a single turn of setup, and its Fairy STAB hits the Dragon-types that anchor most teams for massive damage. It can also run a more defensive support set with Screens, making it one of the most flexible restricted picks in the format. The critical challenge is its Speed and setup dependence: Geomancy requires a turn to land, so opponents will target Xerneas or Taunt it before it sets up, and it needs redirection or speed support to guarantee that turn. Its defensive typing is strong but it is vulnerable to Steel and Poison coverage, which the format carries. The best Xerneas teams are built entirely around protecting the setup turn — redirection, Fake Out and speed control are not optional. Once Geomancy lands, Xerneas outspeeds and overwhelms most of the format. If your team can guarantee the setup window, Xerneas is one of the most game-ending restricted Pokémon available.

Suggested usage notes
Xerneas performs best when its role is clearly defined in team preview. As a Physical Attacker and Special Attacker Pokémon, focus on positioning it where it can execute its job without being forced into unfavorable exchanges. As a restricted Pokémon, it will attract significant counterplay — plan support and speed control around it.
When teambuilding, pair Xerneas with Pokémon that cover its type weaknesses (see counters section below) and provide the speed control or redirection it needs to function. Review the common moves and items section for established sets, then adjust based on your team's specific needs.
