VGC analysis
Chien-Pao is one of the most efficient physical breakers in Regulation M-A because its Sword of Ruin ability lowers the Defense of every other Pokémon on the field, which is a permanent damage boost to its entire team. Its Dark/Ice STAB combination is excellent offensively, and its speed tier is elite enough to outrun most of the format. Its signature move, or its Ice coverage, lets it threaten the Dragon, Ground and Flying cores that anchor defensive teams. Its weaknesses are severe: it is extremely frail, vulnerable to the format's common Fighting, Fairy, Fire, Bug, Steel and Rock coverage, and it dies to almost any strong hit that connects. It functions best as a lead that trades itself for a key threat or as a fast breaker that pressures from turn one before the opponent can answer it. It pairs well with partners that benefit from its Defense-lowering ability and with redirection that keeps it alive. Chien-Pao is a high-reward, glass-cannon pick that rewards aggressive, calculated play.

Suggested usage notes
Chien-Pao performs best when its role is clearly defined in team preview. As a Physical Attacker and Speed Pokémon, focus on positioning it where it can execute its job without being forced into unfavorable exchanges.
When teambuilding, pair Chien-Pao with Pokémon that cover its type weaknesses (see counters section below) and provide the speed control or redirection it needs to function. Review the common moves and items section for established sets, then adjust based on your team's specific needs.
